This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade music students are ready to rock on the recorder! My plan is to have a recorder consort started by the spring with all 3rd graders playing along on an instrument.

My campus is home to nearly 500 wonderful kids who delight in music and learning.

We are a Title I campus that provides free lunch and breakfast to all our students. Most of our students are English Language Learners and go from Prekindergarten through 5th grade in a bilingual program based on the Gomez-Gomez model.

My Project

While the recorder is a hard working instrument that is easy to play, not all recorders are made with quality in mind. Dollar store "flutes" are often just colorful toy noise makers that look like real instruments. Children trying to learn on these instruments often mistake the poor quality of the instrument for inability to play it. Music will not happen on these instruments! My plan is to have a quality recorder checked out to each 3rd grade student for the school year for at home practice. I own a set of quality recorders but have not used them in 2 years due to fear that I will not clean them well enough and cause a child to become ill. Students bringing instruments from home often only have access to toy recorders that do not work or are not pitched correctly to A=440. Each student needs a quality, designated instrument for use at home and in the classroom.

Having recorders on hand for each student will not only cut down on cleaning supplies and time, it will eliminate the risk of illness passed from playing a community recorder.

In addition, a quality instrument will sound amazing with little effort and encourage the students to practice and learn. With your help, WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK....the recorder.
