Providing an environment where my students and discover their inner scientist is on the top of my to do list. With your help, my students will find that physics isn't boring, it can even be fun.
Our school is in a tight knit community in rural Ohio.
There are just under 300 students in grades 6-8. My students work very hard and they deserve the best. Fortunately, they are creative thinkers and can put together many of their projects with a little bit of this. At other times it is up to me to get creative. With a school provided budget of $50 per year to spend on equipment and supplies, this is me being creative.
My Project
My students need to build the confidence they need in order to convince themselves they can succeed in science. With the foam tubing, masking tape, and stand clamps we will study kinetic and potential energy, while coming up with a solution to a specific problem. Given the materials they will build a simulated roller coaster which will transport a marble around a curve and through a loop. Afterwords they will describe their solution correctly using scientific vocabulary.
Traditionally jobs in this area were in agriculture and light industry.
Three large manufacturers within 40 miles have now closed their doors. The vast majority of the farms in the area are too small to provide a living and most farmers are either part time or have retired from work in the city. Not just here in Ohio, but all over the country, the jobs of the future are requiring a solid knowledge of basic scientific principles. I want my students to be able to explore all their options.
