This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen wind go out of a sail? That's what it's like when a group of fifth-graders gets an idea or a topic and then is told to hope they can find out about it in an encyclopedia from the last century! My students need computers to do research and to present what they have learned.

My students are about 90% Hispanic, 10% Filipino, but nearly all born in the USA, in a California urban setting.

Their families are far from wealthy, their parents mostly immigrants. My school is a public cooperative magnet, and we stress work and learning in cooperative groups, much as occurs in the adult work force.

My Project

Two netbooks will enable two more small groups to do research, create presentations, and become more computer-literate. More students will be proficient in touch-typing and word-processing. Students will learn how to create Power Point projects and evaluate data.

This project gives students more say in choosing topics they can relate to in their research, and more ability to create a final product they can take ownership of.

It gives them more time on task, more ways to discuss what they are learning, more participation in what they learn. It better prepares them with skills they will need in the work world.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
