Reporters Rolling Like a River

My students need a cart to use as a camcorder dolly and to transport yearbooks and 3 dozen reporter's notebooks to start out the next school year.

My Students

My digital journalism students need a smooth cart to shoot video while moving across a floor. The cart can be used for many other things including moving yearbooks from storage to the classroom and back. Students also need reporter's notebooks to use while conducting professional interviews.

Our diverse suburban high school has a student population of approximately 2,000.

Ninety-five students comprise the newspaper, digital and yearbook production staffs. They are busy interviewing sources, writing, editing, printing, shooting photos and video, and myriad other things. They have high standards and enjoy the work. They deserve to be supported with good tools of their craft.

My Project

A cart will allow journalists to move the camcorder smoothly as opposed to handheld. It's also a versatile piece of equipment to move things around the school. Reporter's notebooks are simply bound, ruled, 4x8" paper. What kind of resource is blank paper? Somehow, the notebooks magically transform a student into a professional reporter in the eyes of sources and the students themselves. The notes students take are crucial in accurately reporting the news.

The news my students provide to the school through broadcast, newspaper and yearbook helps to build a strong school community.

The young journalists learn a variety of professional skills that will serve them well. The cart and notebooks will support this.
