Reluctant to Ravenous Readers

My project needs graphic novels that are written and illustrated for children. We need 13 new titles to encourage reading and add some excitement about the books available in the classroom.

I teach a group of fourth graders who are talented and posed to learn, but could use some materials to inspire their efforts in reading. The group is mixed, but many are from high need families that can not afford basic school supplies and few extras such as books.

Students that are reluctant to read feel that they do not have the ability to read. The text filled chapter books seem overwhelming to them. I hear them complain that the books are too difficult for them to complete. Long sections of text with few pictures appears to them as a barrier to reading.

With a supply of graphic novels designed for elementary school students can provide a "bridge" or a place to grab hold of reading through the exciting pictures and text that is broken down in smaller portions. These books have been shown to be effective in making reading fun and provides a starting place for the reluctant reader. These materials may be the beginning of a life of reading for some.

Please consider making a small donation to this project. Your help along with several others could make this a reality for a child this year. Fourth grade is a crucial year for reading development and with your help, students may embrace reading and become a successful part of the community.
