My Students

Do you remember playing with and manipulating plastic letters on your parents' refrigerator when you were a child? Wasn't it fun? Well, my students need that same experience to help them learn to read!

I teach first grade in a wonderful rural primary school.

My students hop off the bus every morning and burst into the classroom full of wonder and anticipation! "What are we going to do today?" they ask. I am just as excited to teach them as they are to learn.

My Project

My students need these magnetic letters and white boards so that they can manipulate the letters and learn to sort and spell words. Physically moving the alphabet letters gives first graders multiple opportunities to make connections between letter patterns and solidify their word knowledge. There are 65 first graders in my school configured into four different classes. The materials in this project will be shared among all four first grades, and so the project will impact an entire grade level of students.

Although using the magnetic letters and whiteboards will help all of my students learn to spell, they will be especially effective for my students who learn best by touching and feeling.

Physically moving the letters allows kinesthetic learners to totally engage with the learning activity.
