This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever dreamed of traveling to the Great Barrier Reef? Many of my students have never left the city they live in. While studying ecosystems, I want my students to learn about an amazing ecosystem I was fortunate enough to visit this summer.
I teach in a high poverty public school where 97% of my students are on free or reduced lunch.
My students are a group of wonderful, hard working fifth graders! There are 34 in my homeroom and all of them dream about their futures and doing well in school as their opportunity to improve their lives.
My Project
Most of my students have never left the landlocked city that we live in. As we begin our study of ecosystems, I want my students to "dive" in to a study of coral reefs to parallel our study of the ecosystem we live in. The Reef Library I am requesting will bring a far away ecosystem to life. My students will learn about food webs and how the organisms in a coral reef depend on each other.
After I traveled and took a class on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, I want to be able to effectively share all the wonderful things I experienced.
Our culminating experience will be a Reef Sleep at school where we video conference with Reef HQ in Australia. I want my students to have an appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the world we live in so they will be inspired to help care for it.
