Reducing Energy Waste by Removing Compost from Our Schools

My students need 2 yards of compost removal service for 5 months.

My Students

Our school has worked hard to reduce waste and increase recycling. Our district will not support composting unless they see that see that we can reduce enough waste so that we are not paying additional funds. By supporting this program you are helping our school show that this can be done.

Our students have expanded our "green" ideas over the last 2 years and are working very hard to show that we can make composting our food waste at school financially sustainable.

We already have the process and committed "green team" members in place working hard to compost. The problem is it ends up in the dumpster because the district won't pay for it to be composted until we can prove it costs the same or less then we already spend on garbage services. This year our class is working to reduce energy waste in our building. We are participating in the Disney Planet Challenge and hope to significantly reduce wasted energy in our building this year. Our students are very enthusiastic about learning, but our school struggles financially and has a high free and reduced lunch rate of around 72%. We are also very culturally diverse with a very high English as a Second Language (ESL) population.

My Project

Every day there is a huge amount of waste in schools. If you divide up the waste you will see that paper and food waste make up a large part of the dumpster contents. Our goal is to reduce energy vampires (the devices that suck the energy from our school). Our Energy Vampire Slayers (AKA caring activists students) are working to increase recycling efforts and reduce waste wherever we find it. It is hard to ignore the energy waste that is going in a landfill from our school and we believe that working together we can eliminate a large part of the waste we create and reduce our energy for the good of our planet. With this project we want to rent and dispose of 2 cubic yards of compost a month through Waste Management for 5 months.

This will save us and our community from wasting energy in the trash dumpster.

Thank you for your help and effort, without you our situation may not change. Reducing waste each month will show the district that we can successfully run this program.
