Ready to Battle: Texts for Competitive Readers

My students need 8 copies each of 4 books--There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom, Love Ruby Lavender, Phineas L. MacGuire, and Number the Stars--to be successful in the Battle of the Books competition.

My Students

“Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time."- Donalyn Miller Through the Battle of the Books competition, students are suggested quality texts that encourage them to experience what is mentioned in the quote above.

My school is a Title I school which qualified for a free lunch program for all students due to the high percentage of free and reduced lunch.

Currently, between my two classes, I have 43 students from diverse backgrounds. Many students have only a few books at home and rely on checking books out of the school library or reading books from the classroom library.

My Project

My students need these specific books including, There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom, Love Ruby Lavender and Number the Stars to be successful in the Battle of the Books competition. These books are a part of the Battle of the Books competition which encourages good values through quality texts. Through the purchase of eight books of each title, students will not have to wait until the books become available in the school library. Students will either be able to read the books during their independent silent reading station or possibly participate in literature circles during small group time. The end of the school year will be approaching quickly, and students will be fully prepared for the competition.

This project will change students' lives for the better by allowing them access to books that will encourage a love of reading.

Students will challenge themselves to gain a deeper understanding of the texts so that they will be successful in competition. Through the reading each of these texts, students will learn a lot about life and will also benefit from cooperating and collaborating as a team to learn the themes and values within the texts.
