My Students

First grade is an exciting year when students make amazing progress in reading! Small group reading instruction will enable me to guide them as they grow and succeed as readers. In order to provide them with this tailored instruction, we need sets of books at varying levels of difficulty.

My students attend a small public school in a low-income, urban area of California.

They are an eager and enthusiastic group of first graders who love school, and are always eager to learn. Unfortunately, because our school is in a poor area, my students do not always have the resources they need and deserve.

My Project

Although my students are at varying levels of reading ability, all of them are eager and ready to access the world of literature that awaits them. In the classroom, small group guided reading instruction allows me to tailor my teaching to my students' individual needs. During this instructional time, students are grouped based on reading ability and what specific reading strategies they need to practice or learn. These small groups consist of no more than 5 children, and they change as the students grow and develop. In order to provide this guided reading instruction, we need sets of books at varied reading levels, so that I can use appropriate books to teach each reading group.

Your generous donation will provide my students with access to resources which we currently do not have.

These books will be used for reading instruction that will help open the doors of literacy to them and all the opportunities that literacy can provide.
