Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember Ramona...I felt just like her on so many days when I was young! I always seemed to get myself in trouble with my sister and my parents and I was always quietly convinced that I was unfairly persecuted. That is the feeling I want to awaken in my students!
With a high API score, parents, teachers, students, and administrators are proud of our school and our commitment to education.
We enjoy working together to build a life-long love for learning. My class is an inclusive second-grade classroom. We support and welcome all learners! The vast majority of my class, and the students at our school, receive meals through a federally funded program. My students are considered English Language Learners, but they are, for the most part, reading chapter books at grade level. Most are very expressive in their spoken English and they quickly grasp the humor that can be found in multiple meaning words, idioms, and inferences...we use lots of laughter while learning! The students love to listen to stories, and while we all enjoy a great picture book as inspiration for discussion and written expression. After having the students listen to a few chapters of Beverly Cleary's Ribsy, I knew they would benefit from a deeper evaluation of Ramona.
My Project
As Ramona faces third grade, she is confronted with a variety of challenges on a daily basis. How should she let her mother and father know she is growing up? Why doesn't her sister want to be with her more often? How can she build friendships at school? How can she relate to her teacher? These are all things to which my second-graders can relate. Working together in small groups, students will examine each chapter determining the primary issues facing Ramona. After a student-led class discussion of the findings, students will then imagine themselves facing the same dilemmas and will brainstorm options in partners or in small groups. Students will then develop opinion papers supporting a particular position Ramona should take or expressing and supporting another opinion formulated in relation to the storyline captured in the chapter.
Donations to this project will help build critical thinking and engender the ability to express and support an opinion.
By introducing and developing these skills early in elementary school, I am certain that the students will be better prepared to meet the critical thinking and expression skills that will be needed as they progress throughout their lives. Whatever the future holds for these students, I want them to be able to share their perspectives, in any forum, with confidence.
