Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever struggled to understand something you've read? Have you ever quit reading because it was just too hard? My students have, and they need some help!

My students live in a high poverty area and most read below grade level.

These students are motivated to learn but are frustrated as they struggle to understand a textbook written at a grade level much higher than their comprehension. As we work through the year they are becoming better readers, yet they remain frustrated by their history textbook.

My Project

I am asking for books to use as supplemental resources in my classroom. These books are not only written in a narrative format, making them easier to understand but they contain vivid images, allowing the students to see the history they are studying. This will allow me to create reading assignments that allow my students to read independently, increasing their confidence and enthusiasm towards school.

The ability to read and comprehend is vital in today's world.

Many students do not read because they lack the confidence to understand without the assistance of a teacher. By providing students with low level, high interest books I can provide students with learning opportunities that will increase not only their historical knowledge but also their love of learning.
