Special Education teachers serve students who will thrive if given innovative, targeted lessons in a warm, comfortable setting. In my classroom, I am striving for a clean, homey place where we can relax. For my students, school hasn't always been fun. I want to change that attitude.
My students are sweet, wonderful kids in the 4th and 5th grade.
My school is a suburban Atlanta elementary school known for a friendly atmosphere and a staff who truly cares about their students. I transferred to this school from another district elementary. I immediately noticed the warm, welcoming atmosphere. The teachers come to school each day ready to make a difference in the lives of our children.
My Project
I hope to use the large rug for a reading area so my students can lay on the floor with a great book. The carpet squares will be used for project based learning activities for small groups of students to gather on the floor with their materials. By creating little conference areas instead of sitting at desks, I hope students' ideas and imaginations will really expand on the basic concepts presented from our standards. I also hope to use the squares for more physical learning activities - large motor games that liven up stationary desk learning.
My students love the idea of my classroom as an oasis where they can feel peaceful.
Having classical music softly playing, with a cozy rug to rest on with a pillow and a book, will spark a love of reading they haven't been able to feel before. School is very stressful for special needs students and having a place to call "home" during their school day will help change their ideas about school being a horrible, lonely place. They need the opportunity to feel special in a good way.
