Reading? In Math Class? Yes!!

My students need a class set of the book Flatland to integrate reading in Math class, and whiteboards for graphing 2-dimensional figures.

My Students

I will admit that what happens in math class can not often be taken out of the context of math class. But what if it's possible to take a basic knowledge of geometric space and apply it to the unknown? I believe my students are ready for this opportunity.

My students are an advanced 9th grade Geometry class.

They love asking questions that are "outside the box" to most people, but perfectly reasonable to me. They are yearning to be challenged in a new way. For most of their education they are told what to do, and can perform magnificently. Now I want them to decide what to think themselves, and pose new questions! This is a peek into what they can hope for throughout high school and into college.

My Project

"Imagine a vast sheet of paper on which straight Lines, Triangles, Squares, Pentagons, Hexagons, and other figures, instead of remaining fixed in their places, move freely about [...] and you will then have a pretty correct notion of my country and countrymen. Alas, a few years ago, I should have said "my universe": but now my mind has been opened to higher views of things." -Edwin A. Abbott. I believe Flatland will inspire creativity in my students. After reading the book, I plan to use the whiteboards for the numerous applications in two-dimensional geometry. They will write proofs, justify their reasoning, and illustrate their ideas using the graphing whiteboards.

The book Flatland changed my mind about math when I was in high school.

I want to show my eager Geometry students what thoughtful questioning can lead to. I believe they are ready for the challenge.
