My Students

Do you remember what it was like to learn how to speak English? Many of us do not, because we were so young. Many of my students are currently learning how to speak/read English. Listening to readings on these iPods is a means to ensure my students are being exposed to literature in a fun way.

My students come from very different backgrounds.

We have a very diverse population within our school. In my classroom alone, over half the students are Hispanic where they speak only Spanish at home. In fact, one student came at the beginning of the year speaking no English at all! I have fallen in love with their diversity! However, because of the language barriers, my students struggle with reading on grade level text. My goal is for the students to be exposed to higher level text by listening to reading on materials they can easily transport to comfortable settings within our classroom.

My Project

There is nothing better than falling in love with reading, especially as you read through a great book. Because of the language barriers that many of my students face, they often struggle reading through books that interest them. However, because we first learn to understand the language through auditory means, my students have fallen in love with listening to reading! We have 2 computers that allow students to listen to reading, but, unfortunately, that is all. Because of these iPods, I feel that my students will become more fluent readers based solely upon the fact that they are hearing the stories being read aloud to them by a fluent reader. When they hear fluent reading, and follow along in the book, they will become more fluent in their own personal reading. My students will learn to fall in love with books that interest them, whether or not there is a language barrier.

I truly feel that this project is important because it is teaching my students how to become fluent readers.

Because many struggle with reading fluently, being able to listen to books allows them the opportunity to become exposed to higher level text as well as practice their fluency.
