My students need leveled reading books to help them establish a vital foundation for reading. Leveled reading books will enable me to instruct them at their exact level.

My Students

Reading is the foundation to education! I have the absolute joy of teaching Kindergarten students to read. It is amazing to watch them emerge as early readers. My students are eager to learn how to read. Now I need the essential materials to teach them how to develop a love for reading.

My students are a vivacious, energetic group of children.

They bounce into the room each day ready to learn. My students come from a diverse background but celebrate each others differences. They are students ranging from ESL students to middle-class, single parent families. My school is the most supportive, caring school I've ever worked at. The focus is 100% for the children. We offer many after-school programs to engage children in positive, supervised activities run by teachers and staff at no cost to the student. Many of my students do not attend a pre-school program due to financial hardship. Therefore, my classroom is the first exposure to literature. I want to provide them with the proper foundation to learn to read. I am currently using materials from an old reading program but we are missing most of the books. In addition, the books only teach letter sounds and do not expose my students to sentences and content.

My Project

The best part of my day is Guided Reading. I love to teach my students the skills they need to develop the ability to read. There is nothing in the world like seeing the eyes of a child who just read their first sentence...it is truly priceless! I spend a lot of time planning out this portion of the day because I know how vital it is to have a proper foundation. My students complete a lot of hands-on work with alphabetic manipulative's as well as incorporate writing into our learning. We do not have access to a computer so I've designed several games to teach phonemic awareness. The donation of these books to our classroom will mean SO much in their learning. I am very limited in how far I can take them in their Reading with the resources I have. Most of my students are ready for the next level. I've worked tirelessly creating hand-written books to expose them to sentences and sentence structure. A leveled reading program is what my students need to go to the next step.

Part of the reason I became a teacher was to be a part of a bigger process in the lives of children.

I am a facilitator in their learning. I am only one piece of a very large puzzle. In teaching Kindergarten, I am the foundation block. It is my duty to ensure that my students leave me having a solid foundation to build upon in future grades. I take my job very seriously. I am asking for help in providing what I cannot. Please give me the tools to help my students learn to read.
