My Students

Do you remember when you were learning to read? Comprehension was the most difficult skill to master because of how extensive it is. My students need independent reading materials so they can work together with partners or in small groups.

My students are faced with the struggle of high poverty.

Some of our students are enrolled in the backpack program that a local church provides because their parents do not have much food at home. 54% of the student population is in the free or reduced lunch program. I teach 18 third grade students where 13 of them are ESL students who speak another language at home. Their ages range from 8-10 years old. Our school is a Title I public elementary school with about 700 students ranging from grades PreK-6.

My Project

Reading comprehension is one of the toughest concepts for ESL students to grasp. They speak one language at home and English at school. This is difficult for my students because their family members are unable to help. I have a student who has to be our language translator during a parent conference because the parent does not understand English well but the child does. This project will allow my students to be able to build fluency which will lead to strengthening reading comprehension. Each one of these materials will allow my students to work independently in centers while they work with certain comprehension skills. I will also be able to use them in a small group lesson when teaching a particular comprehension skill. Please, help my students to get a Reading Comprehension Bingo Library, At-My-Desk Reading Comprehension Activity Library, Reading Comprehension Activity Pockets, and Comprehension Quick-Pick Card Boxes.
