Reading About Math

My students need trade books, like "The Go-Around Dollar," "180 Days of Math for Fourth Grade" and "Grapes of Math ," that are about math, and that help them make connections to real life situations, making math real.

My Students

Math time can be a time of exploration and practice. However, there are some students who still struggle for those real life connections, or just one more way to view a math concept, such as symmetry, fractions, or multiplication. These books will help students see math in another perspective.

My students come from a small community of a population less than 600 people.

Their family dynamics range from the traditional or blended, and many of the parents are either students at the local college, or work in the forest or logging industry, the local hospital, or in the education field. Our school is one of 4 elementary schools in the district.

My Project

Some of the books we're requesting talk about many math concepts, such as fractions, symmetry, multiplication, money, time, and geometry, that fourth graders will be expected to learn. Some books tell a story to help explain the concept, while others provide examples of how those concepts occur in their every day world.

These books are so important, mainly because even though we use exploration and practice to learn these many math concepts, there are students who still struggle with some of the concepts.

When books that tell stories to help explain the concepts, or show how these concepts happen in their world, they help students make more solid connections to them. These books can be read to them as a class, then explored further by the students, connecting reading and math together.
