Readers Are Learners

My students need a variety of books, found in these 9 leveled collections, to read during our weekly after-school Mighty Mustang Reading Club, which encourages reading for pleasure.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every Monday when the dismissal bell rings at 2:23 pm., I heard the sounds of students rushing to our Mighty Mustang Reading Club. They can't wait to come to read along with their classmates. The only problem they face is there isn't enough reading material for them to read and share.

Every second through fifth grader, whether gifted or not, has the opportunity to join our Mighty Mustang Reading Club.

We have students who can barely read and others who are reading well beyond their grade level. We are encouraging everyone to read for pleasure. Our school is a second-year Title 1 school in Southern California with a diverse student population. We are a high-performing school with an API of 850. Our teachers have gone above and beyond to attend additional professional development to learn the critical thinking pedagogy of Dr. Sandra Kaplan of USC so we could teach her strategies to ALL our students, not only those who are gifted. We believe EVERY student is gifted, and it is our responsibility to uncover their unique potential.

My Project

Having additional reading materials will excite and enthuse our Mighty Mustang Reading Club members. Not only will they have books geared toward their individual grade levels, interests, and abilities, but they will be overwhelmed by the knowledge that people cared so much about encouraging their reading activity that they gave them a host of books. Among the books that will be particularly helpful are those targeted for our boys. All too often books don't meet the interests of our boys; they need material that will make them want to open the books and read.

This is the second year of our reading club.

Our reading collection comprises books that were left over from a reading series 10 years ago. We've had to look in old closets around school to find enough books for our readers. The donation of books for our reading club would keep our club alive!
