My Students

Each year 37 percent of incoming kindergartners are not prepared to succeed in school. While some kids enter school with an understanding of more than 20,000 words, others understand fewer than 3,000"Carol Rascol" (executive director of reading is fundamental).

I teach a class of 26 Second Grade students.

They are all eager to learn, but are all on different reading levels. The goal at my school is that all second grade students will be able to fluently read 90 words per/minute by May 2012; however right now 50 percent of my students are currently reading below grade level.The school where I teach is a Title One school in a developing city in Arizona. The population is comprised of mostly ELL (English Language Learners) students. Most students also receive free/reduced lunches.

My Project

As a result of receiving this grant I will be able to foster a "love" for reading in my students that will take them to unimaginable heights. Research indicates that the better students are in reading, the better they will perform in other academic areas such as: math, science and social studies. If my students are read to daily, given the opportunity to be exposed to words daily and read daily; there is no doubt in my mind that 90 percent of them will be reading at or above grade level by May 2012.

A recent report commissioned by Read is Fundamental indicates that increasing children's access to books significantly increases their literacy skills and reading performance.
