I found that students aim to please and faces light up when they do well. My class comprise of many students with high academic needs in addition to special designed instruction. My goal is for all students to excel academically and make learning fun.
Half of my students are performing below grade level in reading and math.
Without adequate materials it is very difficult to close the achievement gap between where they are academically, and where they should be. Due to district wide cuts it is difficult to provide necessary resources that will assist them in reaching their highest potential. As a result, resources are very limited in teaching a class of 21 - 30 students in which performance levels range from first through fifth grade. The comprehension games and close reading activities will focus on common core skills that will improve vocabulary, context clues, main idea, inference, analyze cause & effect. The math learning center will help students to master math concepts by using manipulative to reinforce skills. Each math domain have several skills for students practice at various performance levels.
When a Common Core skill is taught, I envision my students using the hands on activities during independent learning centers in reading and math. Students will work in small groups to practice the introduced concepts while having fun at their performance level. The activities will assist students as they write opinion essays, identify parts of speech, master multiple-meaning words explore nonfiction text features, respond to high-interest writing prompts as well as review skills in each math domain. The comprehension games and close reading kits allow students to learn these common core standards in order to develops betters skills in fiction and nonfiction; main idea & details; determining theme; context clues & inferences; cause & effect; citing text evidence; and author's purpose. The math learning center will allow student to measure angles with a protractor, use place value cards to explore expanded notation, as well get hands-on practice with fourth-grade math.
