Ravenous Readers: Promoting Reading Comprehension

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember getting lost in your first book? Or being transported to another world through reading? These are the types of experiences that I want to provide to my students as they read to learn and also as they learn to comprehend what they read.

I teach at a Title I school and my students are predominately second language learners.

Reading comprehension has always been a difficult task and has been made more difficult due to the less than engaging literature we have in our basal readers. I want to continue to "hook" my students with engaging books.

My Project

I currently utilize reading groups to reinforce reading comprehension skills such as making connections, asking questions, making predictions, and summarizing. The availability of books in sets of six are rather limited at my school and I am quickly running out of options.

I hope to continue my students' reading progress and to foster their love of reading.

I hope the ten new sets of literature I picked will facilitate their thirst for reading and ultimately to encourage them to constantly seek comprehension of what they read.
