Raise Up Our Chorus with New Risers!

I am the chorus teacher at West Bainbridge Middle School in a little town in Southern Georgia. This is my third year teaching and our chorus program is growing and getting better and stronger every year. Despite being in a low-income, semi-rural area, our school continuously meets goals and standards due to a highly dedicated teaching staff. I consider myself to be very lucky to have such a supportive network of teachers to help me through my first years as a teacher.

The students in our area come from a wide variety of home lives. Many of our parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and are very rarely available for behavior conferences, let alone chorus concerts. My first year, it was a struggle getting students to show up to our night concerts and I was told that because of this same problem, the previous chorus teacher had stopped having night concerts entirely. In the beginning, our attendance problems may have been a blessing in disguise.

A chorus needs risers to stand on for performances. I came into a school that was decently equipped for a normal sized chorus. 5 metal risers in relatively good condition and three old wooden risers. Squeezing three students to a row, and using the floor as a fourth row, we had the capability to put almost 100 students on the stage at the same time. Unfortunately, after setting up for our first concert, I discovered that the wooden risers were not in any condition to safely support the weight of multiple middle schoolers. I was so stressed out about whether or not I'd be able to fit all the students on the stage that it was almost a relief when so many did not show up! We made it through that first concert and multiple concerts after that by the skin of our teeth and some creative student placement. This year, my third year, I am happy to say that our chorus has swollen to 115 members strong, but our riser capacity has not changed.

Our first concert of this school year occurred in September at our area high school and I was thrilled when almost 95% of my students attended. I have been working very hard to build a bond with my "kids" and it is finally paying off with their loyalty to our program. Because we performed at the high school, we were able to use their risers. There were 9 risers and my students took up almost every inch of space. This made me realize that something needed to be done about the riser situation at our school. Because of the high cost of each riser, it is not be possible for us to purchase even 1, let alone the 5 that we will eventually need to hold all our students and allow for future program growth. You can help provide us with safe, sturdy risers that our choral students can use for many years to come. Thank you for taking the time to help my students!
