Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Homemade. Heirlooms. Keepsakes. Treasures. All of these words describe quilts. Who doesn't want a cozy, warm quilt to sit under during the winter when the cold is creeping in? I want my students to learn the art of quilting.
My students are great.
They are a mixture of Hispanics, Caucasians, American Indian, and African Americans. Our school has a very high percentage of ELL students. Most of these kids receive free or reduced lunches which means there is not a lot of money for extra items (including things needed for school). This is why I want to provide resources for my students at school that they may not receive from home.
My Project
Quilts can be great heirlooms to pass from generation to generation. I want my students to continue the tradition of quilting and I need your help. We are asking for quilting books and jelly roll fabrics to help us with our endeavors. In the past we have made some quilts in our fashion class just like the patchwork quilts. I want my students to design quilts and the books will help them gain ideas.
We will begin make quilts from start to finish. The process will be choosing the material, pinning them together, sewing the strips in place then pressing the finished product. After this we will add a lining and fabric for the quilt back and then we will hand quilt our quilts!
This process gives my students a chance to see how much work is involved and gives them a sense of ownership and pride in their finished products. They learn to work with fabrics, learn basic sewing techniques and patience!
With your help we can create beautiful quilts.
Quilting is becoming a lost art and I want to teach my students that quilts take time and dedication.
The students in the past have loved completing their quilts and it is an exciting and busy time in our classroom.
