This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

BRRRRZZZZZZZ! How annoying is a loud pencil sharpener? The one in my classroom is so loud that it disrupts everything else. Since I cannot let students use it during my lesson, they all want to use pens to do math, but math should always be done in pencil! My students need a solution!

My students are 7th graders attending a small school in low income community.

Our school works hard to create a positive and effective learning environment; however, our resources are very limited. I try to support them as much as possible in the classroom by providing them with any materials that they might need and this project will help me do that.

My Project

With these materials, I plan to set up a pencil station in my classroom. I am specifically requesting quiet pencil sharpeners, so that students will be able to sharpen their pencils whenever they need to without disturbing their classmates or my lesson. The pencils will allow me to ensure that all of my students can meet our classroom expectation of doing their work in pencil. My students need to learn to go back through their work to correct mistakes, which becomes a very difficult and disheartening task when work is done in pen. The scribbles and crossed-out numbers tell students that they have done something wrong and discourage them from wanting to try again. I consistently run out of pencils and this should help me stay supplied for a long time to come!

Pencils are a basic and crucial need in my classroom.

The station that I will set up with this project will help make pencils and sharpeners available to my students at all times, encouraging them to do their work like "real mathematicians"!
