Which puzzle is both interesting and challenging enough for each four-year-old student in the class? Which student needs a puzzle with big pieces while developing fine-motor skills? Which student just needs assistance in figuring out how to turn the piece so that it fits?
My students are in a Developmental Bilingual Education class.
They come from Spanish-speaking homes and are able to have their first school experience in the language that they know best. These students are growing both socio-emotionally and cognitively. These children primarily come from low-income families and often do not have access to puzzles at home. It is so amazing to see children take on the challenge of a puzzle that it just a bit difficult for them, to persist, and to feel the pride of figuring out the puzzle solution.
My Project
Teachers are always trying to meet a student where he is at, and then scaffold him to the next level. The four-year-olds in my classroom need a variety of puzzles to address different needs. Some students need to work on manual dexterity while others need logic puzzles that will challenge their mathematical thinking and problem-solving. It is a shame when there are not the variety of puzzles to fit that variety of learning needs.
The four-year-old children in my classroom would benefit from a variety of puzzles that can be rotated onto the puzzle shelf throughout the year.
I would love to be able to offer a changing variety of puzzles that would appeal to different children's interests and needs.
