The students in my four-year-old kindergarten come from Spanish-speaking families. My classroom is one of four bilingual 4Ks in our city. Our students are learning the basics in their home language to start with a strong academic and social-emotional base. We integrate some English into our day, and with each grade level, the percentage of English to Spanish increases. There is great emphasis placed, however, on maintaining the Spanish spoken with family.
