Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The beauty of nature always inspires poets and writers. During my first year of teaching, I found that my fifth grade students didn't have enough exposure to nature and beautiful things. They live in East Harlem, which is comprised of concrete and bricks, and not a lot of greenery. Therefore, it is my desire to take them out of the classroom for one of our Writer's Workshops this coming fall (2005). I want to take my class to the New York Botanical Garden, where I know they will be inspired by the surroundings to craft some beautiful writing. The workshop I want them to participate in is called "Prose, Poetry and Plants" and it examines the connections among literature, nature and science. In addition to finding out how plants inspire great works of literature, students will use scientific observations of plants and wildlife to create individual and class poems. (I will be happy to share their work with you if you help to fund this trip!) Too often, I have noticed that my students don't think they have anything to write about; that no one will care about what they will write. Therefore, the underlying mission of this trip is for all of my students to discover that they too can be poets and writers! Thank you, in advance, for helping to make this trip a reality for my fifth graders.
