Project Pet Job Skills Curriculum

Imagine a meaningful job-training opportunity for students right in your own neighborhood where everybody wins: the students, the community, and even homeless pets! I teach a middle school class of students with moderate to severe mental and physical disabilities and autism. My students range in age from 11-15 and are preparing for transition to high school using a life skills and pre-vocational skills curriculum.

The supplies my students need for our life skills curriculum are not on a typical school supply list. Instead of paper, pencils, and calculators, we need things like laundry detergent and cooking supplies. Most of all, we need opportunities for the students to practice real-world daily living and job skills in a meaningful setting.

This year, we have partnered with a local animal rescue organization to provide them with laundry services and to create toys and bandannas for the adoptable animals. Our school is within walking distance to this facility. The students will pick up the laundry, return to school to wash, dry, and fold, then return it to the facility. Once a week, we will set up a "workshop" in the classroom to cut out and decorate bandannas for the animals to wear at their weekly adoption events. We also will create small stuffed cat toys for the adoptable cats. The students receive valuable volunteer experience in a motivating environment, while also receiving instruction in fine motor skills, laundry skills, and basic job skills.
