My students for this project are in grade 6 to grade 8. They are self-motivated and want to learn about future technology and computing programming. They participate in competitions and field trips that enabling them to learn more.
A group of more than 10 students will participate in the Agile Youth Challenge, a programming codeathon competition just started this year. The students need laptops that are light to travel and with batteries that last a long time. During the day, students will learn about project planning, team working and programming by applying the Agile Software Development Methodology.
The requested Chromebooks will be used for all student competitions and field trips for the Girls Who Code Club. In addition, these Chromebooks will be used when computing activities are required in school hallways or school gardens where Internet service is available.
In Their Own Words
"Our teacher introduced the code.org website to us last year to learn about programming. This year we are learning Scratch programming on the Internet.
In February, our teacher told us about the Agile Youth Challenges on March 7 and April 19. The challenge is open to students with any level of programming skills. Our teacher encourages us to participate. Eight of us had participated on March 7. We learned so much on that day from the students from other schools and from the professional programmers who were helping us there. We would like to go again on April 19 with more classmates. We want to learn more and we want to win the challenge.
Our goal is to learn more about Scratch programming and team programming. This project allow us to learn solving problems by creating programs and work in teams. This will help us to prepare ourselves to become programmers in the future. The next Agile Youth Challenge will be on Sunday, April 19, 2015. We would travel to the competition with these Chromebooks using public transportation. We will use the Chromebooks to create Scratch programs to solve the problems we pick to work on. We will use Google Docs to share planning ideas and Google Slides to create our final presentations. We will use the built-in camera to take pictures of the day and create a website about the day that is required by our teacher."
