Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids only get to be kids for a brief amount of time. They will spend more time as an adult than as a child. I take so many photos of my students throughout the school year and put them together in a memory scrapbook so that when kindergarten is long gone, their pictures won't be.

My students attend a dual immersion school that is allowing them to become proficient in two languages.

It is a very small school that is not the most beautiful, but it has a very beautiful mission that is to create learning environments that are safe, engaging and above all inspiring. Our school is very small and charming. It doesn't look like a modern new school, but those of us fortunate to be there don't care because we know that our students don't need fancy buildings to learn in. What we do have is much more important. We have students that are opening up their minds and hearts everyday as they become proficient in Spanish and their minds are preparing for their third, fourth or fifth language once they leave our school.

My Project

I'm so excited at the thought of actually having a photo printer in our classroom. The convenience of printing out my students' pictures right away instead of waiting until May to begin their scrapbook gifts is priceless. I dread having to go and print 500 or so pictures at the store, but now I won't need to! Along with photo printer, I am requesting some new play food to revive our kitchen area and Magna tiles that are so awesome for the kids to build castles and cubes galore. We have one set that is very popular and seems incomplete. So I wanted to surprise my students with a second set so there is more fun to go around. The giant children of the world floor puzzle I chose because each month I teach a new language to count to 30 in as well as learn to say "good morning" in that same language. I will be able to refer to that puzzle time and time again and they can see their own culture perhaps in the puzzle itself. Lastly, I chose new Spanish books for my students to practice with.

A kindergarten classroom is the first social and academic experience for many of my students.

Having access to appropriate texts at their reading level is essential in building a strong foundation in literacy. I will capture them reading, or building castles or preparing a pretend meal in a picture that they will treasure forever. Kindergarten for me as a child is a vague memory and I wish I had a scrapbook full of memories. Please help me make that gift of memories possible. Thank you.
