My Students

"Art class is why I come to school." So many of my art students tell me this on a daily basis. My class is a safe space for them to express their interests, emotions and sense of identity. Unfortunately, my school does not have any money for supplies.

My students live in a very rural town in the Arkansas Delta.

Our district serves predominately African American Students and we have 95% free and reduced lunch. All of my students are very motivated in art and love to explore new media. I have students who would like to be graphic designers, photographers, fashion designers, visual artists and teachers. They come to class wanting to learn techniques in a variety of media, explore themes that are important to them and understand art historical movements. My art students are extremely passionate about art and many of them come after school on Wednesday afternoons to do more art, even though I see my students everyday for an hour! Many of them cannot stop creating art and spend most of their free time doing so.

My Project

I am requesting printmaking materials because my students have studied the work of Albrecht Durer, Kathe Kollwitz and Hokusai, but have not yet had the chance to make a print because we do not have money for supplies. This year I have used leftover supplies from the art teacher before me, and don't have any printmaking supplies. My students would greatly benefit from making a print this year to learn the artistic process and prepare their portfolios to be eligible to apply for art school and summer art programs that would prepare them for college. My students will learn about printmaking and design a linocut as their culminating project for Art I and Art II.

The prints that my students make will grow their confidence working in a variety of materials and provide an excellent final portfolio piece.

My students will be able to become well-rounded artists who have worked with a number of materials. Any donation to this project will help my students find yet another artistic inspiration!
