My students need access to educational resources only available on VHS and miniDV tapes, re-recorded to DVD's through the purchase of VHS and miniDV tape converters.
For many years, VHS and miniDV tapes were the standard used to capture teachable moments in the classroom, or to present concepts. Vast libraries of taped content were developed over time, creating wonderful learning opportunities for generations of students. Now, they are inaccessible to students.
We are a charter school that empowers our students to learn through a variety of experiences and venues, Kindergarten through Eighth grade.
We believe in the power of the integration of the arts to create connections and understanding of core academic curricula. We provide a learning environment that honors individual learning styles and empowers the students to learn in a variety of formats, while maintaining high academic standards and expectations. Students create, integrate, and experience learning through a variety of venues, that allow them to explore the entire educational landscape. We preserve many of these educational expressions through video, making it possible for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
We have consistently scored high on state mandated tests, and have maintained and exceeded the high standards of education excellence that our state requires. We serve a rural population, and have a poverty rate of over 50% in identified free and reduced lunch.
My Project
Throughout the years, many video tapes have been created to bring artists, inventors, places, history, science, math, and many other topics for students to experience and learn through this visual and auditory source. School performances, classroom projects, book reports, interviews, and other experiences were preserved for future viewing. However, with the advent of the DVD and the Internet, tapes have fallen out of vogue, while the content of these tapes has not been replaced through newer formats. Through the purchase of two VHS to DVD converters and one direct DVD recorder, which will be connected to our existing miniDV player, our collection of VHS and miniDV tapes will be re-recorded onto DVDs, and will become accessible again to students in a student-friendly format. This project will allow students to again experience these valuable resources as an integral part of their total educational landscape.
As much as times change, they stay the same.
Perspectives from the past, even in how information was presented, is a valuable learning tool. Too many of these videos are no longer available. Past performances and "the history of the school" will now be available for students to access and study. These VHS and miniDV tapes will provide valuable learning opportunities in time-tested ways, preserved in a student-friendly format, allowing students a window to the past while looking to the future.
