My students need materials to build a neighborhood such as art supplies, paper, remnant yarn, and paint. They also need some basic skill games, puzzles and sentence strips.

My Students

While the stories in our curriculum package on families and friends are children's classics, they are do not represent the actual neighborhood surrounding our school. This project will help us to recreate the features of the neighborhood as a connection to the stories.

We use dramatic play to practice life skills during the day.

For instance, we have an office manager to help manage the classroom with tasks such as lining up and passing out materials. We work together to use the resources available to create and discuss scenarios such as how safety / traffic issues, health concerns and other issues that may occur in a neighborhood. The police officer may have to direct traffic in blocks while the doctor may be needed to assist in the resturant. While our imagination is limited, our learning is stifled by the lack of resources.

My Project

The materials included in this project include art supplies to build houses, schools and stores. Our "neighborhood" will have a grocery store because we built it ourselves. In addition to the fine motor skills, this activity will provide the opportunity for life skills discussions such as the benefits of grocery shopping versus fast food. Pre-K students are capable of having these types of conversations.

We try to keep this classroom as interactive and dynamic as possible by showing the students that what they are learning "at school" is used "at home".

This technique helps us to assess how the students are applying the knowledge if they are able to transfer the information across disciplines.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
