My students need electric propagation mats, an automatic thermostat control, potting mix scoops, a stock tank, and measuring spoons for work in the greenhouse.

My Students

On May 22, 2011 our schools were destroyed by an EF5 tornado. We lost all of our supplies and resources. As an agriculture and natural resources program, we lost an immense amount of supplies. We missed out on a lot of learning without a fully furnished greenhouse last year, and we hope to restock!

The students who will use these particular resources the most are juniors and seniors who are learning advanced horticulture skills ranging from greenhouse management to landscaping and gardening.

Students enrolled in agriculture and natural resources classes are the future of our nation. When enrolled in these courses, students use inquiry-based, hands-on learning to discover the natural world. These are non-traditional agriculture and natural resources students, since they come from an urban environment. My students are important to me because they have to overcome many daily challenges that high school students should not have to face. Before the tornado that destroyed the city, one challenge our students faced was poverty. Over half of the students qualified for the free or reduced price lunch program. After the tornado their challenges multiplied because many lost a friend, family member, home, pets, schools and their normalcy of life.

My Project

The FFA motto starts out "Learning to Do, Doing to Learn" and that is what we aim for in my classes. We learn by doing and with this particular project we will be able to use these propagation mats and the automatic thermostat to start vegetable and bedding plants from seed. The measuring spoons will be used to measure fertilizers or pesticides. The stock tank will be used to blend our own potting mix, and the feed scoops will be used to fill pots and flats with potting mix.

These resources will allow us to learn by doing, so students will be better prepared for careers related to botany, horticulture, landscaping, and other plant science related fields.
