Poetry Matters

The cost of 30 copies of Poetry Matters: Writing a Poem from the Inside Out by Ralph Fletcher from Barnes and Noble is $219, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

Have you ever read a book about writing that is so compelling you can't wait to read the next chapter? Believe it or not, I've found such a book. Best of all, it appeals to 5th grade students and has the potential to open up a new world of writing to them. The book is called Poetry Matters, and it's written with a student audience in mind. I bought one copy and was so excited about it that I began to read it to my class. Each chapter takes the students on a poetry-writing journey and almost magically seems to simulate their flow of words. The problem is that I only have one copy of the book and my students want to read along with me. One student said, "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have enough copies to do a Literature Circle on this book?" I have decided that even more than that, I would like to have enough copies for my entire class to read with me and use as a reference later. I've only read 4 chapters so far, but I've been amazed at the powerful writing that has emerged from experimenting with the ideas in this book. I love the way this book breaks through the barriers that keep many students from being successful writers. One student with learning difficulties wrote a poem that won our school's Young Author's Contest! I know she will cherish that experience forever, partly because she normally struggles in school and gets little positive recognition. My idea for using this class set of Poetry Matters is to read the book aloud and have my students follow along in their own copy. After each chapter they will be given time to write in their journals. Periodically, we will select their favorite poems to revise and edit. After completing the book, we will publish a class anthology of poetry. We'll also publish the poems on our class web page. A project like this could have a lifelong impact on students by giving them opportunities to view themselves as real writers and poets. Writing poetry can also help students deal with feelings and issues as they enter the turbulent teen years. Poetry really does matter!
