Poetry + High School Students = Creativity For The Future!

My students need 25 copies of the book "Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry," a poetry anthology edited by Billy Collins.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Poetry! Yes, I recognize the uphill battle I face when I say this word in front of teenagers. But this is precisely why we need good books full of poems that can help students see the beauty, value, and even the FUN of poetry! My students have not yet had this opportunity.

My students are aged 14 to 18, and often have tough home lives.

Many are English language learners or come from homes where their parents are illiterate or Spanish-only speakers. Many work outside of school and struggle with realities that I could never have imagined as a freshman in high school. This being said, my students are bright, capable, and just itching to make a connection with the things going on inside their classrooms! On my campus, the teachers work hard to find materials and lessons that will allow our students to reach the levels that we believe they are capable of reaching.

My Project

In Billy Collins' own words, "High school, all too often, is the place where poetry goes to die." Yes, I realize that poetry might have a bit of a bad reputation among high school students as being "boring," "worthless," or consumed with hearts and flowers and mockingbirds at dawn. However, I know I can make them appreciate poetry! Billy Collins has compiled a wonderful anthology of poems that are funny, witty, ironic, sarcastic, paradoxical, sad, beautiful, and, above all, real! The words used and ideas expressed in these poems speak to the very core of our humanity. There are poems about cars, basketball, fathers and sons, cartoons, snowballs...this book will really give me the chance to explore and dispel the myth that poetry can only really be about love and sadness. I humbly ask for interested donors to consider helping me put these books into the hands of my students.

The best way I can hope to convince you might be to use the words of the editor/poet of this wonderful book.

"Poetry 180 is one of many efforts to beckon people back to poetry by offering them a variety of poems that might snag their interest. I am convinced that for every nonreader of poetry there is a poem waiting to reconnect them to poetry." That's why he's the poet and I am the hopeful and appreciative English teacher begging you to let me use this kind of thinking in my classroom!
