Please Help Me Get More Nonfiction Books For My New Readers

My Students

My students' individual book boxes lack non-fiction books. Non-fiction books for new readers are very expensive and it is difficult to find non-fiction books that are easy enough for a first grader to read. I would love my students to be able to gain knowledge while they are learning to read.

I teach first grade at a high-poverty public school.

My school is academically challenged and our students face many challenges. In addition, one-third of our student population speaks English as a Second Language (ESL). Most of my students are very excited to learn how to read and they feel very proud each time their reading level goes up. Several students would like to read non-fiction books; however, most non-fiction books are too difficult for new readers. My students would benefit from non-fiction books because the information in the books would increase my students' background knowledge. Non-fiction books would also help some of my students be more interested in reading.

My Project

Please help me have non-fiction books available for my students. I requested book sets that are related to our core content and sets that would be of interest to my students. It is important for students to have access to both fiction and non-fiction books. My class has a lot of access to fiction, but we have very few non-fictions books that are easy enough for them to read. It's frustrating to see my students be excited to pick out a non-fiction book only to realize that the text is beyond their reading level.

Reading is a top priority for me.

I want all of my students to have access to a wide range of reading material. Some children are reluctant to learn how to read; I want all of my students to love reading time and look forward to picking out and reading their books. I want non-fiction books to be available for all of my students - even for my struggling readers. Thank you for considering my request!
