Please Help Increase Chicago's Science Literacy

My students need engaging books to read in my physics, fundamentals of engineering, and science concepts classes!

My Students

Have you ever read an engaging fun book and realized when you were done that not only did you enjoy yourself but you learned a great deal?

We are a large public high school with a small budget!

We are in the heart of the wonderful city of Chicago. Our high school has a very diverse student base, and we are extremely proud of this. My students are extremely bright and I do not want our lack of resources to hinder their learning.

My Project

Everyday I will begin class with a 5 minute silent sustained reading with the class set of books. I want my students to enjoy reading and allow these good books to ease them into a science frame of mind for the period. Obviously, reading everyday will help with literacy gaps. I will pre-assess student skills, and I will model techniques to hone their reading skills as we begin our daily 5 minute routine. At the end of the year I will give a post assessment and collect the pre-assessments to determine how much progress we made.
