Play is the Work of Small Children-Fred Rogers Part 2

My students need new costumes for their dress up area. I chose costumes that they see out in the community daily. They also need a new crib and some appliances for the kitchen area.

My Students

Help us work. Scratch that! Help us play. We need materials for our dramatic play- home, and dress up areas. My preschoolers acquire new language through hands on material. We need new clothes to wear in dress up. In our kitchen area but no appliances to cook them in. Please help us.

We are small children in a big city school.

All of the children in our preschool class have to moderate to severe special needs including: Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Global Deficits. This is a center based preschool program which means that the class is broken up into several structured centers where the children may explore freely throughout the day. These centers include: Dramatic Play, Sensory Play, Computer, Blocks, Math, Literacy, Puzzles, and Art. Our big mission is to increase each child's oral language and expressive communication. When a child learns to play, they learn to communicate. And when they communicate, they are ready to learn.

My Project

In my first part of this project I am requesting two major pieces of furniture: a new kitchen table and chair set, and a costume wardrobe and mirror. Now we need materials for these areas. Many of my costumes are hand me downs my daughter and are small and generally only girls want to wear them. The other costumes I have are made out of a rough canvas material that students with sensory defensive do not enjoy wearing. New costumes that represent people in our community would be great. In our kitchen area we have so much food! We have multicultural foods, which represent each of the nationalities of the children in class. We have a stove, fridge, and oven, but no small appliances such as blender, mixer, and coffee maker. And I do appreciate the imaginary coffee my students make me every morning!

I have been teaching preschoolers with special needs for 7 years.

I have seen the magic that play can do. The most gratifying moments I have as a teacher is when I witness a non-verbal child discover their voice, through play. When they put their little hand in mine and point and name objects throughout the room- hat, table, chair, apple, truck. It makes all of their hard work and my hard work worth it.
