My students need items to play with at recess. Housecleaning stand and set, dinosaurs, Katch-N-Throw balls and sticks, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and a ball inflator.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach all subjects in an all day kindergarten in a high-need school.

I currently have 28 students. 85% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language. 91% of students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning these families are living at or below the poverty line. Many families do not have the funds to purchase items that are used in imaginary play or physical activity for their home, so having these items at school are so very important. This way all of my students get to experience these things. Kindergarten has become such an academic place, so students who did not go to preschool did not get that chance to play at school. Playing in the classroom is not an option if I want all of my students to be at grade level, so putting these items out at recess allows for them to play.

My Project

If you are familiar with the budget cuts in California, then you know asking for anything that is not deemed as essential will not be purchased. Items that are used for play would not be deemed as essential. My 5 and 6 year olds need to have a variety of items to play with at recess. By adding dinosaurs, child-sized brooms, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and Katch-n-toss, students will have more items to use and play with during recess. During recess we take out our play kitchen and play food that we already have. It would be great to have a larger variety of items such as play dinosaurs, sidewalk chalk, and bubbles. I believe when students play with these items they are talking about what they are playing with, which helps them develop their English skills. Research shows that play also helps with problem solving skills and getting along with others. Having a variety of toys to talk about will encourage my students to talk more and broaden their vocabulary.
