Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class has some big goals to meet and big shoes to fill. Students are part of a classroom with a track record of success and excellence - both academic and personal. We are grounded in the motto, "It's not easy being the best, but around here, it's tradition". Each and every day we grow.
My students are from West Dallas and have faced challenges and obstacles that other students are not exposed to.
My students are regularly confronted with obstacles based on their socioeconomic status, race, citizenship, and safety of their neighborhoods. Walking into Algebra II, a different side of my students is revealed. My students are dedicated to their own learning. Students consistently spend more than an hour before or after school for tutoring, come in during lunch to clarify misconceptions, and dedicate more than 5 hours every Saturday morning to mastering Algebra II and the SAT. We are driven by our vision: college readiness and success in college and beyond. We don't have a Plan B. We are committed to Plan A and recognize that Plan A can be achieved in a multitude of ways. Students have already made incredible gains: they are outperforming last year's cohort by 22.5% from this time last year. We are driven to succeed and nothing will deter us from Plan A.
My Project
Studies indicate that success in high school math is a result of work put in. My students have incredible work ethic but unfortunately do not have the tools to practice math at home. In class, we have an assortment of graphing calculators but each student is not able to practice independently. I am requesting these calculators to help my students be successful in Algebra II and beyond. The opportunity to practice using a calculator in class and at home will allow my students to develop the skills needed for a college level math course and for success on the SAT and ACT tests. Their performance on these tests will influence the scholarship dollars they receive and the colleges they are able to attend. These calculators fund a targeted need at a critical inflection point of my students' academic and personal trajectories. They will be used each and every day by students in support of our big goals.
Donations to this project of any size will critically impact my students' access to technology.
Students will have the opportunity to practice their skills inside and outside the classroom. They can use the calculator as a tool rather than a point of stress or crutch. The opportunity for authentic practice and learning through struggle will not only foster exponential growth in mathematics but also support the development of grit and perseverance in my students.
