They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I truly believe that. I have used pictures for years to motivate my students to read and write. After traveling to Europe and developing contacts in schools there, we have also expanded our writing globally!
My students have a lot of energy and enthusiasm.
They are excited about learning. We have a classroom in which we try to have hands-on learning. We study bugs and plants, so we have insects, plants, and even a tarantula in our room. The students love real-life learning. At this age, they are starting to identify what things they like and dislike. They are also developing attitudes towards school and reading.
My students have enjoyed our pen pal exchange program with a school in Germany. They eagerly await pictures and letters from their pen pals. The school is changing. We are now up to 23.47% free and reduced priced lunch. The families work hard and want to be involved.
My Project
This project is for digital cameras, memory cards and camera bags. My students love to take pictures of what they are doing in every subject. We then use these pictures to talk about what they are doing and then write about it. In math, they take pictures as they measure things in the room and then journal about it. In science, we grow plants, watch caterpillars turn into butterflies, monitor the classroom tarantula, and carry out many other activities. Pictures help us document and write about these observations. In social studies, we are studying the culture and customs of Germany with our pen pals from Germany. We take pictures of our classroom and activities to send to them, and in return, they send pictures and letters back to us. When we take field trips, we use cameras to document the trip and then journal about the experiences. Currently we use my camera, and it is hard for everyone to get a turn. I want the class to be able to have access to the cameras when we need them.
I want my students to be deeply engaged in learning.
This project will allow for so many activities that are very motivational to the students. When students are actively engaged, they learn so much more. Writing is a priority for our school. With this project, the students will be more motivated to write in all subject areas. I love teaching and want to keep my classroom a great place to be. Thank you
