This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Believe it or not, reading is a large part of kindergarten classrooms nowadays. On a typical day in my room children are exploring picture books, partner reading, independently reading sight word books, and some students are silently reading at first and second grade levels.

My classroom is made up of 17 5 and 6 year old who love books.

Whether they are looking at the pictures, finding letters or sight words, reading the words they know or listening to stories, they love books! My students come from all different types of backgrounds. We have 65% of our school who receive free and reduced lunch. For many, school is a warm environment where they feel loved, learn and are comfortable in the setting of their classroom.

My Project

I am requesting a display bookshelf for my classroom. I want to create an atmosphere where my students can feel comfortable grabbing a pillow in a nook in our classroom, choosing a book that appeals to them and quietly viewing and/or reading the book. In our current situation, we do not have a bookshelf that the students are able to view the variety of picture books I have purchased for the classroom. They are thrown in a bin, or taking up valuable space on the counters and causing clutter. I want my students to have access to the array of books that are in the classroom. Without this bookshelf, they are unable to see the assortment of books at their fingertips. For a five or six year old, this bookshelf would allow them to visually see the books we have. Furthermore, the bookshelf is kindergarten friendly and easily accessible for them to choose, and reach a book independently. Independence is a lifelong skill that we try to instill in our students.

By receiving donations for this project, I will be one step closer to creating the reading nook I want my students to enjoy in my classroom.

With this bookshelf, I will be able to display the wonderful books we have in our room and the students can easily choose a book of their liking.
