Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Often times student successes are obscured when viewed through the lens of poverty, but in our school, where over 90% of our families are at or below the national poverty line, our students not only survive, but thrive.
As a counselor for the school, I get to work with all of the students in some capacity, but I am also privileged to teach the gifted and talented (GT) program.
These students, despite not having access to resources that many other elementary campuses have, are able to maintain a thirst for knowledge seen in the highest achieving schools across the country.
What led me to begin this quest for iPads was a lesson plan I had for our GT class in which they were to design a STEM-based game or application. Unfortunately, our school has no computer lab or access to much technology, but a few teachers were able to lend their personal devices for students to use. There weren't enough for every student, so one third grader decided to just draw a picture of a tablet on notebook paper and design his app that way (it's no wonder he's labeled "gifted").
Despite the evident struggles our students and families face, our school was 1st out of 80+ schools in our district in science testing last year.
My Project
With these donations, our students will be able to interact with the world in ways they haven't before. They will be able to design games, build apps, have access to millions of books, look at maps, take photographs, make movies, draw, paint, and explore in ways that many of us take for granted.
It's no leap to assume that success in the future will hinge upon one's ability to utilize technology, yet there is a massive subset of our population that cannot afford or access the required technology that is needed just to keep up.
The lesson plans are written, the teachers are ready to teach the material, the students are champing at the bits, eager to learn, but the resources simply are not there.
