Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What excites me most about this project is that the idea began with them as an entire class. This is not one student wanting to complete this project; it's my entire 6th period. These students have struggles of their own at home. It inspired me to see how concerned they are about these world issues.
As we began our ecology unit we watched multiple public service announcements about different conservation issues. The students began to ask if they could make these to help with some of the issues as a final project for the unit.
Of course, I said. YES!!!
Since then students have been bringing me different conservational causes that they think are important and asking when we will be able to start the project. I have worked with the students to create a lesson plan and structure for the unit but do not have the technology to create and edit the videos. I asked the district if they could spare the funds and sadly the answer was no. So, I asked students if they wanted to try and get the tablets donated. They were ready to do what ever it takes to get this project going and asked what they needed to do to make it happen.
These students are so driven to complete this project and I will do anything to make this project a reality by the end of the school year.
In this project students will be making a public service announcements (PSA) about different conservation issues. (like saving an endangered species or the reinforced) They will start out by completing research about a topic important to them. Students will create an information sheet and marketing campaign for their cause. Including a digital poster and their very own PSA announcement. The tablets requested will be used to record and edit to videos that will be presented to the class.
The final day of the project students will be given and envelope of "money" for them to donate to other students projects within the class. The students that raises the most "money" will earn extra points for their grade and I will donate $50 to each of the winning conservational causes in the students names.
This project will not only encourage teamwork and connects directly with the NGSS but will give students an emotional connection to something outside of their everyday lives.
In Their Own Words
"I want to make a public service announcement because of water. Only one percent of the earths water is freshwater so we need to save it. I believe in a world where water will be accessible for all beings and that wars will not be fought for the precious liquid. I think I can make a difference about the situation on water by making a public service announcement with these new tablets about how to save water or pay for research to clean bad or salty water. " - Saul
"Ms. Velasco believes that I can make a difference. I want to show her that she is right by making a difference for all of the endangered animals. I will pass out flyers and tell all of my family to spread the news about our tablet project, and let them know how much it means to me!!! These tablets will allow me to make a video where my voice will be heard and I will not misuse this opportunity." - Destiny
"I hope that my PSA will bring more awareness to Pandas because they are almost extinct. I will do everything I can to get a donation to help these beautiful animals in need." - Fernando
"This project in important because most people now a days don't pay attention to the environment and I want to change that." - Odalis
"I want to help bring attention to the water crisis that affects my community right now. I hope I can put up the posters I make in different places in the community." - Daniel
