Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Today, it is more difficult than ever to engage students. I want to achieve this by introducing projects that translate into real world experiences. As John Henrick Clarke once said, "A good teacher, like a good entertainer first must hold his audience's attention, then he can teach his lesson."
I teach in a low income area.
While my high school has a great success rate in terms of graduating high school, very few of my students will graduate college. We live in a rural environment and many of the students are minorities. For most, education is not their first priority. Instead, their focus is on life outside of school. Many times they are helping provide for their families. As for the school, it is six years old but still lacking in certain materials. The environment is conducive to learning, as students are expected to attend regularly and complete assignments in a timely manner.
My Project
My vision for the materials I have requested is to teach the physics of electricity by instituting a hands-on project. The students will be given a breadboard and the project will be to treat the different colored boards as rooms in a house. They will use the diodes as room lights. Their goal will be to use a combination of series and parallel circuits in a way that each light can be operated independently, in the same manner one would find in a home. In addition, they will troubleshoot problems as they learn the basics behind electric circuits.
This project will be designed as project based learning.
The students will have the opportunity to personalize the experience based around certain ground rules that I will establish. My hope is that this personalization will lead to life long learning. Most exciting is that this project will teach skills that may interest and inspire students to a career that deals with electricity. Finally, I can teach the importance renewable energy, a topic that will be relevant for years.
