My Students

Students come alive when they are using their hands and working as a team! Using raised garden beds in our school garden will allow our kids to "get their hands dirty" and watch a seed sprout, care for it as it grows, and enjoy the "fruits" of their labor.

We are a Title I school.

The majority of our students live in a nearby housing project. Most kids do not have access to green space. Many have never had the opportunity to plant a seed, watch it grow, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. I wish to give them that opportunity.

My Project

Imagine students learning while having fun in the great outdoors in a cross curricular fashion! It is not simply planting seeds in raised garden beds. Groups of kids can research the origin of their vegetables that they will plant (history) and its nutritional value (health). They calculated the times from seed to harvest (math) and kept track of the growing process in journals (english/writing). Starting with seeds and cultivating their vegetables with care to harvest will be a fascinating project. The end goal would be to prepare food and enjoy it communally!

My objective is give our students an outlet where they can learn the value of green space, what it means to work together towards a common goal and ultimately encourage healthful eating.
