Trying to learn about current science from a textbook published in 2005 is not very exciting. Science is so dynamic, our classroom should be as well.
My students are inquisitive and lively.
Keeping up with them can be quite the challenge. Our school is a Title 1 school, which means that a large majority of our student population is from low income homes and are at risk of not succeeding. It is because of these hardships that my students are so aware of how important their education is.
My Project
Having chromebooks will allow my students to research current science events and activities. In the 6th grade science curriculum students learn about earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering and erosion. Using the chromebooks, my students will be able to investigate current earthquakes and volcanic activity at sites such as the USGS, NOVA, PBS, Google Earth.
They will be able to plot earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as they occur and use this data to predict where they will occur next and learn about how will these events effect us locally and globally. Students will also be able to participate in virtual field trips to places such as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Iceland on the Web. These activities are so engaging and exciting.
So many of my students don't have access to computers and the Internet at home.
Having these resources will engage them and pique their interest. Chromebooks also allow their learning to be more personalized and efficient. Right now, I project something on the large screen and we all have to go at the same pace. Chromebooks will allow students to work at their own pace and they will do research and partake in lessons that are interesting and relative to their lives.
