I teach a 5th grade class in a Title I school. I currently have 28 students, and I teach them all subjects, including math. Our math curriculum is very challenging, and one of the biggest challenges is teaching students to use calculators effectively. Calculators allow students to explore more complex math concepts than they would be able to with paper and pencil alone. Since the majority of the items on the End of Grade test require the use of a calculator, it's imperative that students have the most powerful tool available and ample opportunities to use it throughout the year. I recently received training on an amazing calculator called the TI-15 Explorer. This calculator is simple to use, but is a more powerful tool than the one we are currently using. I have a set of ten TI-15 calculators in my classroom and my school system will be providing 20 more. However, this calculator is so advanced that I need an overhead calculator to help students learn to use the TI-15 correctly. This will allow me to demonstrate the calculator's unique features. I know my students will be excited to have such a powerful calculator, and they'll appreciate being able to see its features demonstrated on the overhead.
